Guilin train:
We arrived in 2004 in Guilin with the night train from Shanghai. I the past i enjoyed these train journeys but i had to admit that this feeling was gone. Our children (10/14 years old) were not enthusiast about traveling with the train. Compared with the soft-sleeper train Beijing - Shanghai, this train was not very clean. Train staff still had the bad habit to lock the best toilet (for their own use) and only opened that door after asking.
Guilin taxi:
Outside the railway station were several taxis and with some effort we managed to get all suitcases and bags in our taxi.
The starting price is 7:00 yuan for the first 2 km from 6:00 to 23:00,then 1.60 yuan/km. At night the rates are slightly higher.
Guilin hotels:
We told the taxidriver to go to the Universal Hotel. Till my surprise there was broadband internet in the hotelroom.
We had taken our lap-top with us to sent pictures and contact friends with the MSN Messenger.
Rate for a standard room is USD36 (2007).

Guilin airport:
The Liangjiang International Airport is about 28 kilometer west of Guilin.
The airport shuttle bus will bring you in 30-40 minutes to the city for 30 yuan.

Li River cruise
The strange hills and beautifull landscape made Guilin world famous. The cruise boats have open decks and sail to the village Yangshuo. A bus bring you back to Guilin. The port of embarkment is outside Guilin.

Yanghshuo is a popular village full with tourist shops, restaurants and cafe's. Many tourists and backpackers go to here. Besides budget hotels there are also better hotels like the Sheraton Hotel. The best way to go to Yangshuo is by minibus: departure is from Guilin railway station. With the bus from Dali to Kunming is between 5-9 hours (see Kunming travel guide).

The travel agency in our hotel had arranged our boat tour. I forgot the price of the tour but it is much cheaper to buy your ticket in one of the small offices in Guilin. The boats are all the same. In our (expensive) ticket was a meal included but this is real local Chinese food.
