Chongqing Chongqing is the largest municipality of China with more than 30 million people. It is situated at the Yangtze river ("Changjialing" in Chinese between mountains and hills. Yuzhong is the central district. The center of the city is called Jiefangbei. In this area are pedestrian zones, shopping malls, tall office buildings, banks, hotels and shops. airport The Jiangbei International Airport is 25km from downtown Chongqing. Besides domestic flights also several international flights to Seoul, Tokyo, Nagoya, Bangkok and Singapore. Tickets are sold by hotels, travel agencies or through the internet. An airport shuttle bus drives every 30 minutes between the airport and the CAAC office. Fare is 15 Yuan. Airport website is www.cqa.cn but is only in Chinese. taxi Start rate for the first 3 kms is 5 Yuan.(in 2009) For each kilometer more, about 1.8 Yuan will be added. At night the fare is a bit higher. A taxi from the airport to downtown Chongqing is 25km and cost about 50 Yuan. From the central railway station to downtown is about 20 Yuan. In hotels or shops you can get maps in Chinese and English. Those maps are very usefull because allmost all taxi drivers speak very little english. bus Public buses are the cheapest but also very crowded. Fare is 1 or 2 Yuan. Chongqing's long distance bus station is across the central railway station in Yuzhong District. There are long distance buses to Chengdu, Emeishan and Leshan. train Chongqing has train connections with Chengdu, Beijing, Guangzhou, Xian and Shanghai and many other cities. Chongqing is huge and has many railway stations. With the fast train it takes only 2 hours and 45 minutes to Chengdu Central (North) Station. Fare for this train is about 95 Yuan for a soft seat second class. First class train tickets should be bought at least 24 hours ahead. Depart of the fast train to Chengdu is from Chongqing North Station. boat Chongqing is an important port for the famous Yangtze River Cruises. Special river vessels sail upstream or downstream to Yichang or Wuhan. The largest cruise ships are 5 star luxury boats with a length of 129 meter and many facilities onboard, such as Business Center(Internet,fax), Health Clinic, Sauna, Dancing, Smoking Room and Live entertainment. Most cruises are between 3 - 5 days including short excursions. Cruise boats depart/arrive at Chaotianmen Dock. This area is in the center of Chongqing near downtown. ![]() Chaotianmen Dock. Chongqing downtown Chongqing attractions The large majority of the tourists come to Chongqing to start or end a Yangtze river cruise. Downtown Chongqing has a pedestrian zone with shopping malls and restaurants. Four star hotels located near/in Jiefangbei: Huangjia Grand Hotel and Yangtze Island Hotel. The Home Inn Convention Center is a budget hotel close to Chongqing international convention center with rooms for less than USD15. weather The weather in Chongqing in summer is hot. A temperature between 35 - 40 celcius degrees is common here. Chongqing is also known in China for its foggy days usually in spring and summer. |
