Lijiang is a big city in Yunnan Province (1 million). It consist of two parts: a new part and its famous ancient town with old houses, narrow streets and little canals. The 'Old Town' of Lijiang is listed as UNESCO World Heritage and attracts millions of tourists every year. The center of the old town is Sifang Square. From here start several popular roads such as 'Bar Street' and 'East Street'. In the evening the (house)music is playing loud in Bar Street and waitresses in local costumes are singing and inviting you to visit their bars. The old town its self is full with little shops selling tourist items such as carvings, clothes, leather and painted t-shirts. There are also many budget hotels, guesthouses and small restaurants. Several ATM's are downtown in East Street 24 hrs a day so that getting cash out of your bank isn't a problem. A few local attractions in Lijiang are the Wanggu Pagoda upon the hill, the water wheel, the Mufu Palace and the Black Dragon Park. Popular attractions outside Lijiang are the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (15km) the Tiger Leaping Gorge, (100km) and Lugu Lake (180km). We were in Lijiang in August 2007. We came from Chengdu by airplane and stayed in Wangfu Hotel. A nice 4-star hotel in the Naxi style but unfortunately its location was at the border of the old town. In the morning it was possible to reach Sifan Square in 15 minutes. In the evening however, it became crowded in the narrow streets, and then we walked easily 30 minutes. ![]() view over the Old Town from Wanggu Pagoda |
